Eduscape App Design For The Metaverse
Project Overview:
Overview: I was invited to participate in a designathon sponsored by Avocademy. The task was to design an app that solves the problem: How might we intentionally create a better world through the metaverse?
Timeline: 1 Week
Role: User Experience Designer (Including: Research, Interviewing, Wireframing, UI, Prototyping)
Industry: Education/ Metaverse
Tools: Figma, Sketch, InVision Studio, Otter, Google Survey
Define the Problem:
When given the prompt of improving the world through the metaverse, my mind went immediately to education. As an experienced educator, I know the lasting impact that education has and will have on the world. I also know that there are a lot of inequities and obstacles currently facing the educational system that could potentially be alleviated through the effective use of the metaverse.
I started my project by conducting an initial round of Secondary Research, sourcing background information and quantitative data from multiple sources. The resulting problem statement was:
How can we utilize the metaverse to provide students across the world with access to high-quality education that is engaging and experiential?

Competitive Analysis
Curious about what might already be out there, I conducted a competitive analysis of existing programs that provide students with on-demand VR classes like in the metaverse.
There were three main competitors that I researched:
Outschool
Cospaces
Optima
But were any of these apps able to provide a complete solution to the problem? While they all have strengths, they also lack several crucial areas.

Empathy Map
While teaching during the pandemic, I became very aware of the struggle to create a successful virtual learning environment.
Before brainstorming a solution, I reflected on my experience and wanted to use an empathy map to better understand a struggling virtual learning student.
This Empathy Map factors in what the users Think, Say, Feel, and Do in order to understand the complete picture of our users.
